Today I am reflecting on the path that has led me to where I am today as a vocal artist; there is one pivotal moment that stands out above the rest, my first time singing at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church nearly a decade ago. This experience marked a turning point in my journey, the moment I truly began to see the potential for a music career that I had always dreamed of, but never fully believed was possible.

When I moved to Atlanta in 2013, I knew music had to be a part of my life, but I had no clear vision of what that would look like. I had no idea how or where I would fit in, or if I could even make a meaningful impact in such a vibrant, and competitive city. At that time, Ebenezer was going through a transition, looking for a new Director of Music and Worship. Mrs. Lydia Raglin Thomas, affectionately known as Ms. Lydia, was the interim director, and Dr. Damon Dandridge was the candidate for that particular Sunday.

It was the Sunday that my life would change. Ms. Lydia suggested I try out for a lead part in a song I had never heard before: “O For A Faith.” I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was nervous and unsure, especially because I was still so new to Atlanta and to the church. Not only was I about to sing a song I was unfamiliar with, but I was also going to be dueting with the talented Kathryn Stanley, a singer I had yet to truly know. Despite my nerves, I decided to give it a try. I figured, why not?

The experience was surreal. To my surprise, I was selected for the part. I remember feeling a mix of excitement and disbelief. This moment… this song… and this church became the catalyst for the journey that I am on now.

Looking back, that Sunday marks the moment when I began to take my music and singing more seriously. I remember my time as a student at Jackson State University when I was learning the recitative and aria “For Behold, Darkness Shall Cover the Earth” and “The People That Walked In Darkness” from Handel’s Messiah with my voice teacher, Mr. Willenham Castilla, he encouraged me to consider singing professionally. At that point, I wasn’t ready to believe in myself or in my abilities, but I’ll never forget how Mr. Castilla saw something in me that I didn’t yet see, and never thinking that I would one day be performing those particular pieces as a Laureate Artist at Carnegie Hall. His encouragement is something I now look back on with deep gratitude. Sadly, Mr. Castilla is no longer with us, but I carry his legacy and words with me as I continue to pursue my dreams.

The foundation for my singing was laid by my Dad, Dr. Marvin K. Myles Sr. who instilled in me a spirit of tradition, perfection and discipline. Along with the guidance of other teachers, mentors, and all the incredible people who have crossed my path, I have built a thriving musical career that I am deeply passionate about.

The video of me singing “O For A Faith” with Kathy and the Ebenezer Baptist Church Choir is a cherished keepsake of that unforgettable day. It’s a reminder of where I started, and how far I’ve come. That moment at Ebenezer wasn’t just a performance; it was the spark that ignited my desire to pursue a music career.

I am beyond grateful for every step of my journey, the challenges, the growth, and the people who have supported me along the way. As I continue on this path, I hold those early moments close to my heart, knowing that without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

This is just the beginning. I am so excited for what is to come and can hardly wait to continue sharing my music with the world. I will forever be grateful to Ebenezer Baptist Church, Ms. Lydia, and everyone who has believed in me. You have helped me become the artist I am today, and for that, I am eternally thankful.
